ABSTRACT

The aim of this book has been to explore different aspects of the experiences and challenges that transnational migration involves for older people and their families. The different chapters have reviewed a range of themes, including: relationships between migrants and their older parents;older migrants as formal and informal carers or recipients;retirement migration;the lives of those ‘left behind’ by their children;and older migrants’ strategies for accessing health and long-term care. The variety of experiences covered itself reflects the acceleration in the pace of migration in the twenty-first century, the different motivations of migrants, and the assortment of groups involved. We have now moved into a radically altered context facing older people, migrants, as well as welfare states. In response, this chapter examines, first, the political context facing migrants;second, the impact of COVID-19;and, third, the development of a welfare policy for transnational migration and demographic change. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
